Chapter 1
Kaylie’s POV
I hastily snatched my keys from the hanger on the way out the door. I was so mad. I was beyond hot, and I was letting it be known. My husband told me that he would never call his ex-wife. And, what does he do? He calls her! Then, he gives me a lame excuse. She was causing trouble again, trash talking me. Damn, he should know by now that I can take care of myself. He always thought he had to step in on my behalf where she was concerned. Why? I didn’t understand the reasoning behind that belief. I’d never understand it.
“Fuck it, Tony!” I yelled to him. “I’m out of here.”
I pounded the garage opener button on the wall, almost breaking it. I stepped into my Porsche Boxster, then started it up. I squealed the tires backing out just to drive my point home. Tony stood in the vacant garage slot with his hands in the air acting as if I was a crazy lady. Maybe I was, but he knew that always set me off. He knew I’d be upset that he was speaking to her behind my back. And, why did he sneak around like that? We’d been married for over twelve years now. Why was her name even mentioned in our house nowadays?
Driving toward the beach, I was still fuming over our fight. All I could focus on was how he’d called his ex-wife. We agreed that he’d never do that. The images in my head weren’t pretty. I kept imagining how he’d slept with her, in our house Yes, I know he was married to her, but I hated that too. He never should have married her in the first place. He should have married me twenty years ago, not her.
I stomped the gas pedal to the floor when I was clear of other traffic on I5. I drove fast and furious when I was upset. It was stupid, and I knew that fact. Suddenly someone driving just as fast as me coming from the other direction swerved into my lane. I reflexively turned the wheel to the right to avoid hitting him. I ran my Porsche Boxster off the edge of the road. I jerked the steering wheel back to bring my car back on the road, overcompensating. The car began rolling off of the freeway quickly.
I rolled so many times that I lost count. My head was spinning faster than my car at the moment. I was disoriented, trying to figure out what had just happened. I lifted my head to see a large tree trunk where my hood should have been. There was glass everywhere. I could feel it in my hair, on my arms, and on my face. My seat was pressed tightly against the steering wheel barely allowing me room to exist. I tried to pull myself free from the steering wheel that was pressed tightly against my chest.
The OnStar system voice rang out into the night air surrounding me. “We’ve received a signal that your vehicle has been in a crash. Are you okay?”
I was in excruciating pain. My chest felt like a ton of bricks were pressing against it. I struggled to say the word, “No.” Nothing came out. I didn’t have enough air in my lungs to speak. I tried again to get the word out. I yelled. “No!”
“Ma’am, we’re sending emergency medical personnel right away. I’ll stay on the line with you until they arrive.”
“Call my husband.” I forced the words out as I pushed against the dashboard with both hands. It was no use, I couldn’t free myself.
“I’m calling your home phone now.” the compassionate female voice said.
“Hello.” I heard Tony’s voice answer the phone.
“This is the OnStar system. Your wife has been in an accident.”
“Where is she?” he called out. “Is she okay?”
The OnStar lady gave him my exact location, then he hung up the phone. The ambulance arrived finally. After evaluating the situation and asking me several questions, the paramedics pumped me full of morphine to kill the pain. That was really nice of them. Thanks guys.
Tony arrived on the scene and made his way through the wooded area toward my car. His tall muscular body darted through several broken tree branches. One of the paramedics stepped in front of him to block his path just as he was about to reach me. He talked alone with the paramedics for a few minutes. Why was he hesitating? I selfishly wanted him with me. I wanted him to hold my hand while they cut me out of this mangled car. Why were they stalling him? Maybe they were waiting on some tools to cut the car away. I’d always heard about those Jaws of Life. Maybe I’d get to see them in action, up close.
I watched as Tony threw his head in his hands, and fell to the ground on his knees. He began to sob uncontrollably. Both paramedics placed a hand on his shoulders. They helped him to his feet, then escorted him to my side. He pushed his hand through my broken window and took my hand in his.
“Kaylie, Sweetheart.” He said to me softly. “Are you in any pain?”
“None, thanks to those drugs.” I said, suddenly able to speak without pain. “How much longer until they can get me out?”
“Another twenty minutes if we’re lucky.” He said, then tears filled his voice and his eyes.
Suddenly, it hit me: the reality of the situation, the grimness of the situation. I wasn’t going to make it out of here tonight. I was living the last twenty minutes of my life. This would be the last conversation that I’d have with my husband. I’d never see my daughter again. Never see my family again. “Tony, I love you!” I said to him, crying.
“I love you Sweetheart.”
“Tell Brandi that I love her.” I requested.
I was hoping he’d say that I was being silly, that I was overreacting, that I’d read it all wrong, but he didn’t. Instead he promised with conviction, “I will.”
My suspicions had just been confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt. I was about to die. There was no hope. I wished I was a braver person. I wished that I could die with some dignity, but I started bawling like a baby. I didn’t want to die. I wanted to live. I wanted to see my daughter grow up. I wanted to celebrate my twentieth wedding anniversary. I wanted to grow old with this guy standing next to me.
Tony kissed the side of my head gingerly. He was trying not to jostle me. I managed to look down to see the bottom of the steering wheel actually embedded inside my bloody body. I was practically cut in two.
“Can you tell my mom and dad and sisters that I love them too?” I asked him.
He nodded quickly, trying to control his own tears. “I’ll tell them.”
“My life insurance is in my safe in my office. Make sure you send it in.” I managed to squeak out the words.
He nodded again.
My mind was wandering. I knew I was fading fast. “I love you Sweetheart. Take good care of Brandi and make sure she knows that I love her, no matter what.”
“I will.” He said to me, then leaned over to me and kissed me on the lips.
I kissed him until I lost control of my lips. My head fell back as I felt my last breath leave my lungs. There were no more breaths following that one. Was I dead now? Somehow I watched as Tony threw his body against mine and sobbed against my neck. The paramedics pulled his bloody body away from mine as they pronounced me dead. When he was clear of me, he crumpled to the ground. His sobs were loud and beyond crippling to hear. I tried to speak to him, to console him, but I couldn’t get a word heard by anyone. I yelled, to no avail.
My spirit floated above my husband. I watched as the paramedics placed him in the passenger’s side of his Porsche Carrera. One of the paramedics stepped into the driver’s side, and drove him home. Somehow, I followed them.
